Activity: San Giminiano, the Manhatten of the Middle Ages
A visit to San Gimignano is a complete immersion into the 1300s borgo ambience. In fact, the city (still mostly intact today) is one of the best examples of a medieval town in terms of planning and organisation.
The overriding characteristic of San Gimignano – that just about every visitor will notice from a distance – are its spectacular and unmistakable towers that watch over the scene. And each one has its own history.
The town experienced a period of economic wealth and artistic flourish, above all in the mid-1300s, thanks to the merchants and pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena; the route passed through San Gimignano, dividing it into two. It was also during this time that the town’s foremost families challenged each other in building the highest tower, attempts to exhibit who held the most power.
Around the year 1300, 70 towers symbolized the 70 wealthy families inhabiting this territory. Today, only 13 remain standing. It is the Tuscany that travelers love most, set amidst fields of golden grain, vineyards and ancient hamlets.
Accommodation: Sleep At Farmhouse Villa Palagetto
Room/Bed Type
Double, Breakfast Included
The farmhouse Villa Palagetto is located on the hillside 800m from the medieval town of San Gimignano and its famous towers.
It's surrounded by the estate vineyards and olive groves, and immersed in the large and immaculate gardens of the tiny rural hamlet, a group of ancient buildings dating back to the fourteenth century.
The country house offers many services to its guests: a restaurant in case you don't want to get out for dinner, a swimming pool with a view on the country side (may not be opened in April), cooking classes, wine tasting and many suggestions to visit the area.

The Plaka is one of Athens' most distinctive neighborhoods; a maze of narrow streets climb the slopes of the Acropolis hill, forming the city's most touristy area, with a lively atmosphere both day and night, thanks to the presence of numerous restaurants.

Strolling through the streets of the Plaka you will be drawn to the many inviting souvenir and food stores, as well as the smells coming from the taverns that compete to attract tourists with their fixed-price menus.

In the Plaka you can visit the Museum of Musical Instruments, with a collection of more than 1,000 instruments for a journey through the history of music. Just beyond is the Museum of Greek Folk Art, with traditional costumes, embroidered dresses, and works by the naive painter Theophilos.

Heading up toward the Acropolis, which is not easy to find, you reach Anafiotika Square, a particularly picturesque little neighborhood made up of small white houses with blue-painted doors, reminiscent of a Cycladic village.

Alternatively, so many things to do in Athens, here is a nice article with several suggestions.
Don't miss a trip to Syntagma Square, where the traditional changing of the guard takes place every hour.

You can immediately feel the elegance and sophistication, alongside the warmth and the hospitable vibes that every little detail exudes. The hotel’s refined proposition of luxury has a uniquely Greek vibe to it, shunning flamboyance and placing importance on what truly matters. Discover Monteriggioni

The lovely and off the beaten path Monteriggioni hamlet stands on top of a low hill whose slopes are dotted with olive trees and vines, a few km from Siena.

The castle was founded in the second decade of the 13th century by the Republic of Siena. Its main aim was to create a defensive outpost against its rival, Florence. For centuries the site carried out this function for which it was created, resisting countless sieges and attacks, one after the other. Its military function became less important in the second half of the 16th century, when the whole state of Siena, which the borgo was part of, was annexed to the state of Florence.

Today, Monteriggioni is a perfectly preserved fortified village. You can walk on the city walls to admire the Tuscan countryside, and eat in one of the local restaurants.

DAY AT LEISURE IN ATHENS
Activities:
Discover the Acropolic

A day in Athens can be a wonderful experience filled with ancient history, culture, and delicious food. Here's a suggested itinerary for a one-day visit to this historic city:
Start your day early to beat the crowds and explore the Acropolis, the iconic ancient citadel that includes the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. It's best to arrive when it opens to avoid both the heat and the crowds.
After visiting the Acropolis, head to the nearby Acropolis Museum. It houses numerous artifacts from the Acropolis, providing historical context and insight into the city's ancient past.

Lunch at Plaka (suggested)

Wander down from the Acropolis to Plaka, the historic neighborhood known for its charming streets, colorful houses, and numerous tavernas and restaurants. Enjoy a leisurely Greek lunch at one of the local eateries.

Afternoon in Athens

After lunch, visit the Ancient Agora, a gathering place and marketplace in ancient Athens. Highlights include the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos. It's a short walk from Plaka.

Explore the Monastiraki Flea Market, located near the Ancient Agora. You can find a variety of souvenirs, antiques, and Greek handicrafts. Don't forget to haggle for a good deal.
Head to Syntagma Square to watch the Changing of the Guard at the Hellenic Parliament building. This ceremony happens every hour and is a unique spectacle to witness.

Take a leisurely stroll through the National Gardens, which are located near Syntagma Square. It's a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.
Dinner: Dinner in Piaka or Psiri(suggested)
Return to Plaka or explore the Psiri neighborhood for dinner. Both areas offer a wide range of dining options, from traditional Greek tavernas to modern restaurants

Day 3 - Friday, 12 July 2024
FULL DAY IN VAL D'ORCIA

Val d'Orcia's untouched and wild landscape, only inhabited by small picturesque towns and villages, is one of the most charming sights in Tuscany. Its mellow hills and gorgeous vineyards are part of the UNESCO's Wolrd Heritage Sites.
Activities:
Discover Montalcino
Montalcino is an extraordinary artistic and architectural testimony of the past, and you could spend hours wandering through its streets and lanes.

And, when you are done with history, then you can dedicate yourself to the other Must in Montalcino: wine tasting.

Thanks to its worldwide renowned Brunello, Montalcino has developed an astonishing wine tasting industry. You will find tens of wine bars spread around the old town, where you will be able to sip the wine of your choice, while a passionate sommelier explains to you the subtle differences between the harvests of the past 20 years.

You will find one of the most famous Enoteca (wine house) inside the 14th century fortress, and precisely in the donjon of San Martino. Just in front of the fortress, I suggest the Enoteca Franci, perfect to start your Tuscany Wine experience. They also have a pretty good restaurant!

Discover Bagno Vignoni

Bagno Vignoni is very unique: nowhere else in Italy will you find its main central square has a pool filled with hot springs water. 49 meters long and 29 meters wide, the Renaissance-era piazza is built directly over the original source of hot springs as enjoyed by the Romans.

Since the 9th century, the springs here and in Bagni San Filippo, located a bit further south at the foot of the Monte Amiata, have been mentioned in old travel journals of abbots and others making their pilgrimage down to Rome (and many on to Jerusalem).

The hot springs in Bagno Vignoni have always allowed water to flow even during the warm summer months, thus several water mills were constructed along the Orcia river over the centuries. These ancient mills, along with a complex system of water canals and gorges today constitute the Parco dei Mulini, or Park of the Mills, created in the 1990s.

Don't forget to bring along a swim suit and towel when visiting to enjoy the hot springs. Of course, you can take a break for a whole day and enjoy the many spas.

This is also a good place to have lunch, we suggest Osteria del Leone for great local specialties.

Indulge in Pienza

Pienza is a small jewel of the Val d'Orcia, known as the town of Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini in 1405. Once Pius II became pope, he wanted to transform his humble hometown, Corsignano, into an urban-architectural treasure.

He thus entrusted the total renovation of the village to the architect Bernardo Rossellino and the humanist Leon Battisti Alberti, who in just four years, from 1459 to 1462, defined the harmonious and typically 15th-century appearance of what would be Pienza today.

Walking through the historic center, in the Piazza Pio II, a visit to the Duomo, the Cathedral of the Assumption, is not to be missed. Inside it houses important and remarkable paintings by the most renowned artists of the time, while the beautiful octagonal-shaped bell tower rises above the ancient crypt.

Opposite the cathedral is the Palazzo Comunale, a historic building dating back to the mid-1400s with its main feature: the wide loggia cha has on the facade. Also in the main square, stands the imposing Piccolomini Museum-Palazzo Piccolomini with its hanging garden from which you can admire a truly unique panorama of the entire Val d'Orcia, from Montalcino to Monte Amiata. Completing the closure of the central square is the Palazzo Borgia, home of the Diocesan Museum of Pienza.

The wonderful walk along the ancient walks has been named “Via dell’Amore” (no need to translate…), and offers fantastic views over the Val d’Orcia.

Stop for a picture in Montichiello

This is probably one of the most photographed spots in Tuscany. This cypress lined lovely road is just a few Km from Pienza.

To get there, insert THIS PLACE in your navigator.

The medieval Montichiello Hamlet is simply lovely and deserves a visit as well. There's a second famous cypress lined road on your right just before getting to the village.

Santorini is a picturesque island in the Aegean Sea known for its stunning sunsets, beautiful villages, and rich history. While the beaches are a major draw, there are plenty of other attractions to explore on the island. Here are some things to see and do in Santorini:

-
Santorini Caldera: The caldera is the volcanic crater that forms a large, semi-circular bay on the western side of the island. Take a boat tour or visit one of the villages perched on the caldera rim (like Fira, Firostefani, or Oia) to enjoy breathtaking views of the caldera and the surrounding islands.

-
Oia: Oia is perhaps the most famous village in Santorini, known for its iconic blue-domed churches and traditional Cycladic architecture. Wander its narrow streets, visit the castle ruins, and enjoy the incredible sunset views.

-
Fira: The capital of Santorini, Fira is a bustling town with a vibrant nightlife, numerous shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Don't miss the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which houses artifacts from ancient Akrotiri.

-
Akrotiri Archaeological Site: Often referred to as the "Minoan Pompeii," the ancient city of Akrotiri was buried by a volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. You can explore the well-preserved ruins and see ancient frescoes at this fascinating site.

-
Wine Tasting: Santorini is famous for its unique volcanic soil, which produces excellent wine varieties. Visit some of the island's wineries to taste its distinctive wines, including Assyrtiko and Vinsanto.

-
Ancient Thera: This ancient city was founded in the 9th century BC and offers a glimpse into Santorini's historical past. Explore the ruins, including temples, houses, and theaters, while enjoying panoramic views.

-
Megalochori: This charming traditional village is known for its white-washed buildings and picturesque streets. It offers a glimpse into Santorini's authentic culture and architecture.

-
Santorini Arts Factory: Located in Vlychada, this contemporary art space hosts exhibitions and cultural events, making it a unique stop for art enthusiasts.

-
Sunset Cruises: While not technically a "beach" activity, taking a sunset cruise around the caldera is a popular and romantic way to experience the island's natural beauty.

-
Cultural Festivals: Depending on the time of year, you may have the opportunity to attend local festivals and events, such as the Santorini Jazz Festival or various religious celebrations.

-
Dining with a View: Enjoy Greek cuisine at traditional tavernas and restaurants that offer stunning caldera and sunset views in Fira, Firostefani, and Oia.

Santorini's charm extends beyond its beaches, offering a mix of history, culture, natural beauty, and culinary delights for visitors to explore and enjoy.

Dinner: Dinner at Lava Taverna (suggested)
Don’t expect fancy service, molecular sauces or live piano, the website of this deliciously simple restaurant warns. “Instead, we will give you a lot of passion, grandpa’s favourite dishes and just the sound of the waves.” Marooned at the quiet end of Perivolos beach, with blue and white wooden tables set on a waterfront patio, it’s a quintessential Greek taverna set-up — a rarity on Santorini these days. You can wander into the kitchen to see what’s cooking (perhaps moussaka, stuffed tomatoes, or soutzoukakia – meatballs in tomato sauce) or choose from the day’s catch.

Accommodation: Sleep at Volcano View Hotel & Villas 5*

Climb Mount Profitis Ilias: If you enjoy hiking, consider climbing Mount Profitis Ilias for panoramic views of the island. It's the highest point on Milos and offers stunning vistas.

-
Sunset at Plathiena: Plathiena Beach is known for its beautiful sunsets. Enjoy a romantic evening on this beach or from one of the nearby tavernas with a sea view.

-
Boat Tours: Take a boat tour around the island to discover sea caves, rock formations, and snorkeling spots. Many tours also include stops at remote beaches and the uninhabited island of Polyaigos.

-
Taste Local Cuisine: Don't forget to savor the local Greek cuisine at Milos' traditional tavernas. Try local dishes like stuffed peppers, fried zucchini flowers, and fresh seafood.

Milos has a lot to offer beyond its beaches, so take your time to explore the island's rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical sites

Dinner: Dinner at Gialos (suggested)
Purveyors of unpretentious contemporary Hellenic cuisine, Gialos is an established go-to for globe-trotting epicureans. Casting aside the old adage that you “pay for the view”, this casual little spot on Pollonia’s quay, above bobbing wooden caiques, can be counted on for consistently good cuisine at decent prices. Fish and seafood is Gialos’ strong point and menu highlights include bluefin tuna tataki in a sesame oil vinaigrette and homemade ravioli stuffed with prawn, cherry tomatoes and Kimolos cheese.
